Chapter 222: 221 Let me tell you the story of the Gu Family
Wen Ran had planned to visit her brother, but the nap had disrupted her plans. In the evening, she made food for MO Xiuchen again. After eating, the two cuddled together on the sofa, watching some idle program.
In the middle of it all, MO Xiuchen’s phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID, saw it was coming from Luo Haofeng, and turned his phone on silent before throwing it aside. He continued to hold Wen Ran, feeding her snacks.
Wen Ran stared at the phone for a few seconds and asked him a tad uneasily, “Xiuchen, wouldn’t Luo Haofeng be calling for something important? With your presence in G City, everybody else must know too. Isn’t it unkind of you not to show up?
He was new to his position, and there were certainly some who were displeased with him at the company. Now, he had tasked Luo Haofeng and Qin Mu with dining with government officials. If anyone got wind of this and held it against him, it could be rather unfavorable.
MO Xiuchen didn’t seem to care, he was happily accompanying her while they watched the TV program. He was enjoying the warmth and romance. Upon hearing her words, he replied carelessly, “The fact that Ah Feng and Ah Mu are accompanying them should be face enough.”
Wen Ran’s mouth twitched. Wasn’t MO Xiuchen being a bit too arrogant?
As the saying goes, business should not meddle with politics.
Even though the MO family was the richest in G City and MS Group’s annual tax revenue accounted for 80% of G City’s total tax income, they were just businessmen. The other party was a government official. Besides, the social engagement that evening seemed to involve the Commercial Trade Building project.
“Ranran, you’ve lived in G City for over a dozen years but your dad and your brother have protected you too well.”
MO Xiuchen looked at Wen Ran’s baffled expression, sighed, and inexplicably said that.
“What do you mean? Are Qin Mu and Luo Haofeng’s identities special?”
Initially, all she knew was that besides being his subordinates, Qin Mu and Luo Haofeng were also his good friends. Additionally, she knew that Qin Mu was Sister Li’s cousin, whereas Luo Haofeng lived in G City before too.
Beyond that, she didn’t know anything about their identities.
MO Xiuchen chuckled, fed her a peeled pistachio and said, “It’s normal that you only know Qin Mu as Li Qian’s cousin and are unaware that he is the son of a high-ranking official. He has always been low-key, and few people know about his identity over the years. Moreover, his father was transferred from G City to Imperial City for his duty a few years ago.”
Wen Ran’s eyes widened in surprise. She never imagined that Qin Mu had such a background.
Thinking about the cold and arrogant demeanor he had when they first met, it seemed to be an inherent part of his personality. Previously, she thought it was because he spent a lot of time with MO Xiuchen and thus had a similar personality.
Now, it seemed he was inherently cold and arrogant. Nevertheless, how could two similarly aloof and detached men hit it off and become good friends?
“As for Luo Haofeng, I won’t tell you about him just yet. Discover that for yourself in due course!”
On one hand, MO Xiuchen was creating suspense; on the other, he believed that Wen Ran didn’t need to understand Luo Haofeng and Qin Mu.
Actually, she didn’t need to understand any man besides him. The only one she needed to know was him!
“Alright!”
Wen Ran didn’t probe further. If he wanted to talk, he would; otherwise, it didn’t matter.
She didn’t care about their identities. As long as they were MO Xiuchen’s good friends and would back him up, it was all that mattered.
MO Xiuchen handed her a cup of warm water, and then casually said, “Right, and there’s Ah Kai. You probably don’t know, right? You always address Gu Kai as Older Brother Gu. How about I tell you the story of the Gu family? Would you like that?”
Wen Ran watched MO Xiuchen with slightly furrowed brows, his eyes were warm and sincere and there wasn’t a hint of jealousy or displeasure.
Yet, she recalled the night in the hospital room when he lost his temper because she was close to her brother.
Seeing her silence, MO Xiuchen asked with concern, “Ranran, don’t you want to hear it?”
Wen Ran shook her head. She put aside the doubts in her heart and said in a gentle and teasing voice, “It’s not that. I’m just afraid you’ll get jealous.”
If it were any other time, given MO Xiuchen’s sharp wit, he would have instantly understood the meaning behind Wen Ran’s words. However, at that moment, with all his focus on helping Wen Ran to get to know Gu Kai and the Gu family better, in the hopes that it would contribute to her relationship with them, he momentarily overlooked Wen Ran’s innate tactful nature. “Why would I be jealous? Am I that petty?”
No sooner had MO Xiuchen said that than he suddenly realized something. His eyes flickered as he covered his surprise with a laugh and said, “Ranran, you’re not still upset about that day, are you? That night, it was my fault. I was in a bad mood and lashed out at you. You can forget about it; there’s no need to bring it up again.”
But there was no way Wen Ran could forget.
It was the first time since their marriage that he had furiously uttered the word ‘divorce’, and forced her to make a choice between him and her brother.
Even though he did not ultimately force her to choose, his words had, without question, hurt her deeply.
Before she fell in love with him, she had never thought about divorcing him. And after falling in love, she certainly did not entertain such thoughts.
His sudden accusation that night had left her mind blank for a moment.
She didn’t know what he was going to say after ‘he’s not even…’ But she was unable to forget his agitated mood and incensed tone from that time.
These days, she didn’t bring it up, not because she’d forgotten, but because she was waiting for the right moment to have a proper conversation with him.
Now that the subject was raised again, she wouldn’t miss this opportunity. Casually, with a hint of mockery but calm voice, Wen Ran asked, “Xiuchen, that night, what did you mean to say after ‘My brother is not…’?”
MO Xiuchen’s eyes changed subtly, and he mentally kicked himself for his carelessness and impulsive behavior that night.
Despite his remorse, a faint smile surfaced on his handsome face. “That night, I said something in anger. If you really want to know, I’ll tell you, but you have to promise not to get angry.”
Wen Ran nodded. “I won’t get angry.”
MO Xiuchen put a pistachio he had peeled into her mouth and said slowly, “I wanted to say that Wen Jin is not as great as you believe him to be. Sure, he may genuinely care for you, but at the same time, he is scared. Scared that you won’t need him now that you’re married.”
Wen Ran stayed silent, just silently watching MO Xiuchen.
His explanation was within her anticipation. Over the past few days, she had been guessing what he was likely to say, and what he just said was logical and reasonable, something she had anticipated.
“Is that all?”
Her intuition told her that MO Xiuchen wanted to say something else.
It was quite clear then that he was jealous of Wen Jin. Gu Kai’s kindness towards her, on the other hand, did not seem to matter to him. In fact, that day in City C, he had deliberately left her and Gu Kai to have a conversation..
