Chapter 62 - Trials Of The Sphinx

"Each of us will be trialed separately? Isn\'t this like, super unfair? I mean, they have gods on their side. They have a full fledged god and we are stuck without even the help of our backers.", Raphael sighed.

"Why the hell do you even care. It is not like we will be doing it one by one. It should get over very quickly. Hey, woman with a stupid body. What do you want me to do?", Lucas said.

The Sphinx moved its enormous head as it looked down.

"I smell the wolf on you. What is a Norse child shunned by so many gods doing within a mortal body instead of being chained down Lyngvi?", the Sphinx spoke in a deep voice.

"It is so irritating when someone just recognizes me solely because of Fenrir. I mean, I have my own achievements. Why does every god keep calling me Fenrir\'s mortal vessel?", Lucas grumbled.

"Now is not the time for an identity crisis.", Praneeth put his hand on Lucas\' shoulder. "Just remember, the answer might be a human."

Lucas looked at Praneeth all confused. He turned around and stared at the Sphinx\'s eyes.

"I am ready for my trials, and I am sure that those behind me are as well.", Lucas shouted.

"Fine, mortals. If you shall all pass the trials, then I shall kill myself. If you do not, then you shall make the same choice.", the Sphinx said.

"Kill ourselves huh. Alright, that seems like a fair deal.", Lucas nodded.

"Remember everyone. The stakes are high. Far too high. Remember, the answer might be something so basic that you will overlook it.", Praneeth reminded everyone.

A light appeared above them, and it descended on their bodies. As if they were being taken up into an alien spaceship, all of the council members started disappearing from where they stood, until only Lucas remained.

"So I am being excluded from this trial?", Lucas chuckled.

"You are a god, for all intents and purposes. How can I give a worthy trial to someone like a god. I can only let you pass, because you have already proved your worth when you took in a god within yourself. You may pass to the next floor.", the Sphinx said. Next to Lucas, an oval portal appeared.

"You may pass through this portal to enter the next floor."

Lucas looked at the portal, and back at the Sphinx.

"Did you know, if this was just an hour ago, I might have actually gone through? I wanted to, and still do actually, kill Peter so badly that I would do anything for it? But then, a lot new information has come to light over the past hour, and it made me rethink my priorities.", Lucas said.

"What are you talking about, human? I am giving you what you wish for so much, but you refuse it? I am giving you a ticket to your revenge, laid down to you in a platter.", the Sphinx said with a loud voice.

"Well, you know, there is a voice within me that keeps saying that this itself is the test, but meh. I also think that since you are full of shit, and that you want to separate me from the rest.", Lucas said.

"You are too distrusting for you own good, mortal. I gave what I offered to you in a silver platter, yet you refused it. You shall swallow in your pain and regret-", the Sphinx shouted when all of a sudden, a chunk of her face fell on the ground.

"You know, I was thinking, how the hell a god descended into a city, especially when you live in Egypt. I should have figured out this in the beginning. You are just a shell, even worse than me.", Lucas laughed as he landed on top of the Sphinx\'s nose.

"You dare, human? I have given you respect because you were someone that the apostle respected so much, and I am bound to her by my liege. But I am sure that she would not mind me teaching you a good lesson.", the Sphinx said as the whole statue started rumbling.

"Why don\'t I dare? I am a human with an actual god within me, while you are a pile of rocks with a part of the god\'s power. This is a losing battle and you know it.", Lucas laughed.

"Do you not care for your friends? They are the reason that you did not take up my benevolent offer, weren\'t they?", the Sphinx said. "I will kill them all.", she threatened.

"First of all, please don\'t call them my friends. They are more like, my colleagues. And, I know that once I bust your head straight off, they will be there, waiting inside.", Lucas said.

"And how are you so sure? Nothing is stopping me from crushing them to death.", she warned.

"About that, I know that their trial is going on right now, and I was just way too powerful for you to take me into your cave without my will. So, why don\'t we have this chat later, when everyone is outside?", Lucas said as he stomped on the nose.

By now, the whole statue of the Sphinx was raised up, and the legs were no longer sitting, but rather standing. She was not a true lion with the face of a woman.

Her nose fell down to the sand, and Lucas clung on to the limestone that made the whole structure. He used it as a foot hold and jumped up onto her head.

"Look at me now. I am standing on the top of a god, and she can\'t do anything about it.", Lucas laughed out like a maniac.
