Chapter 106 - A Bigger Picture
Zhenyi jolted when she saw him looking at her. She gave him a small smile but he just sighed in return.
"Are you okay now?" Zhenyi asked cautiously.
Sam nodded.
For the next few minutes, neither of them was willing to break the ice. Zhenyi was feeling guilty and Sam was trying to curb his resentment, but he didn\'t know to who the resentment was directed.
"Zhen Zhen? " Sam called her out.
"Hmmm?"
"Why did you marry him?" Sam asked her in a soft voice.
"Do I have another choice? Was I ever given a choice? No. And I didn\'t know what came over to me when I accepted his proposal but I don\'t regret it, Sam." Zhenyi replied in all honesty.
"Do you love him? " Sam asked her again.
Zhenyi looked at him as if he had grown two horns on his head. "What? No. Never. What kind of question is it?" She asked while giving him a dirty look.
"Fine then." Sam sighed in relief.
Thank Lord, she didn\'t love that fucked up piece of shit.
"Zhen Zhen, we have been through thick and thin, hard and harder times. There was no problem we didn\'t fight together. If I was distressed, you would be the first one to lend me your shoulder. If a tear escaped from your eye, I was the one to avenge for your precious pearls. What changed this time? Or did you punished me for one lie of omission? "
Zhenyi\'s expression was equal part fury, equal part despair.
Did he think so low of her?
"I\'d never stoop so low, Sam and you know it. You didn\'t tell me about Yèyè\'s condition, I get it. You were bound by a promise. I would never punish you for such a small matter. Nothing changed this time, Sam. We both were stuck in our messes and couldn\'t be together this time."
Sam opened his mouth to say something then closed as a nurse came to check up on his vitals. Once the nurse exited, he went on.
"One reason Zhenyi. Just one reason why? " Sam asked her, fury and anguish visible in his dark orbs.
With a sigh, Zhenyi looked around in the room, and finally, her eyes halted at him.
"There is a bigger picture, Sam. A bigger picture no one is currently seeing. Bà, Ryuu, Long Shaoming, or even my husband. But I know there is, call it a strange hunch or intuition or even my stupidity," replied Zhenyi with all sincerity. She would never lie to him, she had no reason to. If there was one person who would discern her uncertainties, it was him.
"Do you remember I once told you that our ultimate enemy is unknown? No one ever saw him or heard of him but he is there. Very much so." Zhenyi paused and Sam nodded weakly. " I think I found a beginning, a core or a lead to his web. I need to entangle in this web to solve it or to show that I\'m entangled," said Zhenyi.
"And your so-called husband is just the means to the very end? " asked Sam in skepticism.
"I don\'t know. He was, but now? I don\'t know. It\'s complicated." She deadpanned.
His eyes widened in disbelief and shock. He didn\'t know what to say to her. She was either the bravest woman or the most idiotic to lose her heart to the man who was supposed to be the means of her grandest plan.
She had not just complicated her life merely in a week rather trapped herself in a bigger mess she could ever escape.
Wasn\'t she the one who told him \' Life is really simple but we insist on complicating it\'?
"A very wise woman once said, Life is really simple but we insist on complicating it. You could have avoided the complications by simply marrying me. Elder Xin just wanted to see you married. He wouldn\'t have minded me as a son-in-law. "
Zhenyi gave him a dirty look and scoffed. "Marry you and problem solve? You don\'t expect me to stay celibate all life, do you? "
"Stop talking about gross subjects." Sam crinkled his nose in disgust.
He was not a prude but he couldn\'t hear about the sex life of his best friend. The best friend he knew since she was in diapers.
"Gross?" Zhenyi scoffed. "You hurt my ears bragging about your one-night stands in the past."
His gaze sparked with amusement, though a small amount of bitterness leaked through. "I used to boast because I wanted you to attend college and stop doing that boring stuff. Uncle Yichen would have supported my cause but you don\'t care about me at all."
"Come on Sam, you know that you are my best friend for life. Please forgive me. This humble subject was wrong, your majesty." Zhenyi spoke, copying his dramatic antics. Poison pare poison and drama cut the drama.
" Sorry, I didn\'t hear you. What were you saying?" Sam inwardly grinned but spoke feigning ignorance.
" I was wrong ---"
"No, Miss Xin is gifted with the greatest gift of flawlessness. How can you be wrong?" His voice lacing with thick derision.
"Please forgive me."
An apology is never bigger than a lifelong relationship. If it can save a relationship, then she can apologize thousands of times for her mistake.
" The great Zhenyi is always right. If she says sun caused rain on the earth, it means the sun is responsible for the rain on the earth." He wouldn\'t let her off the hook so easily. It was not every day he got-- the mighty Xin Zhenyi to apologize.
"Well, the sun is surely responsible --"
"Are you gonna argue with your elder?" He chastised her like an elder.
She gave a quick shook to her head. "Definitely not."
After some time...
"Did he at least treat you good ?" He asked after some time in a soft voice.
"Who?" Zhenyi asked pretending to be oblivious.
She knew he meant her husband.
"Your husband, who else?" He spat out the word husband harshly as if it was polluted with coronavirus.
Zhenyi grinned. "Ah, he does. He is handsome, hot, and very charming. I have no words about his stamina---"
"STOP. I do not wish to know about your extra active sex life. "
"You are just jealous that I\'m getting laid and you are stuck at this hospital bed." Zhenyi shrugged her shoulders.
"And I\'ve no intention to leave this hospital bed," Sam grumbled. Just because he forgave her didn\'t mean he didn\'t loathe Long Jie. He would hate Longs till his last breath.
"Not even if I ask you to beat someone\'s ass?" Zhenyi asked him innocently.
"Does this \'someone\' annoy or pester you? " The brooding Sam looked at her and weakly asked. No one dared to pester Sam Qin\'s best friend.
"No, but he did hurt my dear Aria," came the answer.
"Aria? The brat is here?" Sam knitted his brows. " Of course she wouldn\'t miss your wedding for anything." He scoffed.
Zhenyi hesitated. "Uh...she eloped from home and is now living with Bà."
His eyes widened as the gravity of the situation hit him. "Holy shit. And mom?"
"Mad as hell. Stubborn as a mule. The mother-daughter are not on the speaking terms," replied Zhenyi casually.
"Who hurt Aria?"He asked again.
"A guy she claimed that she loved. Well, I didn\'t touch him for your sake. I thought you might enjoy torturing him. "
"Then mom knows...."
"Not yet but I can inform now." It was Zhenyi\'s time to grill him. And there was no way she was going to miss this brilliant opportunity.
"No. STOP. " Sam exclaimed.
"Please, My Queen. Your Majesty, don\'t tell her." He begged her.
"Ma\'am, it\'s time for patient\'s medicine. The patient should rest now. " A nurse came with a tray of medicines and informed her.
Zhenyi nodded and was about to left the room when she turned back and spoke, "FYI, your mother accepted Fan Bingbing as her daughter-in-law. All the best, Sammy."
"MOM."

[ I\'ve sorted out Ryuu\'s story line today, but there is a problem -- well, the heroine name. You know I tired several names like Elaise, Elena, Elenaor and even scarlet but my mind always stop at Alicina. The name is so fitting for Ryuu\'s heroine . And now you gonna ask what\'s wrong with this name right? Well, I didn\'t noticed before there is a book on AllNovelFull with the couple naming Ryuu and Alicina...and I don\'t know what to do now! Such a dilemma! One more chapter than you will see the big villain. ]
