Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse

Chapter 118 - 118 Entering S City

“So, I’m really thankful you all saved my life, I’ll be leaving soon.”

Zheng Miaomiao was afraid that her saviors might think she was going to impose on them, so she quickly explained.

“Where are you headed?” Su Jin asked.

“To S City, my parents are there. I need to go back and find them,” Zheng Miaomiao replied.

“If nothing unexpected happens, we should reach S City by this afternoon; we can take you part of the way.”

Su Jin had no intention of keeping Zheng Miaomiao with them the whole time, but since they were headed the same way and she had a place to go, giving her a lift was no trouble at all.Nôv(el)B\\\\jnn

“Really? You are also going to S City? I can’t thank you enough!”

Zheng Miaomiao was at a loss for words. Just yesterday, while on the bus, she had thought these people were unapproachable big shots. She hadn’t expected them all to be so kind—not only had they saved her life, but they were also willing to take her along!

Liao Yifan warmly offered Zheng Miaomiao a seat in their vehicle. The spot next to her was already vacant, and as a cute girl in distress, she was very welcome.

Zheng Miaomiao got in the car, and as they drove out the gate, she saw the corpses of zombies scattered outside, which brought to mind certain things, and her face turned pale instantly.

“Did they use me to lure the zombies here?” Zheng Miaomiao clenched her fists and asked Liao Yifan.

The people in the car explained to her what had happened that morning. Zheng Miaomiao felt a raging fury in her chest. She wanted to kill those two people immediately! How despicable to use her to set someone up, especially when that someone was her lifesaver!

“Don’t worry, a team like that won’t get far,”

the person in the passenger seat, Guo Yang, said lazily.

If what Zheng Miaomiao said was true, there was now dissension among that group, and either they were foolish or plain stupid. After all, Zheng Miaomiao was the only Water Element Ability User in the group, and they still attempted to kill her. But there was another possibility—that someone else in their group had awakened a Water Element Ability.

Guo Yang guessed right. Indeed, the previous night in Sun Yixue’s group, a woman had awakened a Water Element Ability. Sun Yixue had long found Zheng Miaomiao displeasing but kept her around because she was the only Water Element Ability User in the team. Moreover, that night, Liu Jiajin had knelt in front of Sun Yixue’s door all night, explaining that he hadn’t intentionally kept the porridge from her. Sun forgave him, and together, they came up with a despicable plan.

In Sun Yixue’s original plan, she had intended to leave Zheng Miaomiao in the yard and let the zombies come in to divide her up. But in the end, Liu Jiajin seemed to have a moment of compassion and locked the gate.

However, Zheng Miaomiao knew none of this. All she knew was that those two people deserved to die.

The afternoon journey went smoothly. They always kept to the edge of A Province, avoiding urban areas whenever possible, so they were fortunate not to encounter large groups of zombies or mutated zombies.

As A Province bordered S City, and having left early at noon, they reached the outskirts of S City by just past four in the afternoon.

“Xiao Jin, it looks like there are people at the checkpoint ahead,”

the driver, Su Xiangzhe, said as he spotted someone waving a flag in the distance, seemingly greeting them?

“There aren’t many, just over a dozen,” Qiqi said.

“They might be the local authorities. We can just drive up there,” Su Jin said while playing with Local Tyrant Gold.

Su Xiangzhe nodded and continued driving forward. At the checkpoint, a young man in a military uniform and wearing a safety helmet was waving a red flag.

He saw the vehicle approaching and excitedly waved at the few cars driving by.

“Excuse me, are you survivors from A province?” the young man in the safety helmet asked eagerly as Su Xiangzhe rolled down the window a crack.

“We’re from H city,” Su Xiangzhe replied.

“Wow, you guys came from so far away, I am an on-duty officer here, welcome to S city!”

“Thank you.”

Su Xiangzhe thought the young man seemed very nice, his words full of enthusiasm.

“Here is a map of S city for you to refer to. If you want to look for your relatives, I suggest you go to the safe refuge marked on the map. It’s where the local survivors have been rescued, and food is distributed daily, with special personnel managing it,” the young man rattled on, and then added, “Once you’re in S city, you’re one of us, S city welcomes you!”

“Ah, heh, thank you, young man,” Su Xiangzhe said, a little taken aback by the safety helmet young man’s enthusiasm. This journey had taken them through many places, but S city was the most unique by far.

After saying goodbye to the young man, the three vehicles continued forward. They noticed that behind the checkpoint there was a military truck parked; it was tall and looked very sturdy. Su Jin guessed that this must be where the on-duty officers were resting.

While Su Xiangzhe was talking to the young man in the safety helmet, Lu Hao had turned on both walkie-talkies, so the people in the cars behind could hear their conversation.

“Miaomiao, let’s drop you off at the refuge first. Your family might be there,” Su Jin said over the walkie-talkie.

“Okay, thank you! I’ll just go there then. Aren’t you going?”

As soon as Zheng Miaomiao heard about the refuge, she instinctively felt her family must be there. She wanted to ask if these people would go to the refuge because it sounded like a good place with daily offerings of food and water.

“No, we have other matters to attend to,” Guo Yang answered.

Now that the safe refuge had been established, they had to hurry to the location Su Jin suggested to get the upper hand. What if someone else took it first?

After discussing the plan, Mao Zhihang started to point out the route on the map to Su Xiangzhe.

“Daughter, what’s up with those people just now? Why were they so enthusiastic?” Su Xiangzhe asked, puzzled.

“S city is one of the places that responded to the apocalypse the fastest. Now their leaders have realized what’s the most precious thing during the apocalypse,” Su Jin said with a smile.

“The most precious thing?”

Mao Qiqi cocked her head to ask, and Local Tyrant Gold mimicked Mao Qiqi’s gesture, tilting his head as he looked at Su Jin.

Patting Local Tyrant Gold’s soft fur, Su Jin smiled and said, “It’s people.”

That’s right. In other places, people had always thought the most precious thing during the apocalypse was supplies, but the leaders of S city placed “people” first. Whether special ability users or ordinary people, they welcomed them all and established the first safe base, which is now the safe refuge.

In the end, facts proved that S city’s management decisions were the most correct; with people, they formed a huge team to fight the zombies, with people, they built the largest and most robust safe base in record time, with people, they were able to develop agriculture, animal husbandry, even water management, power stations, and research and development…

This was also why she had chosen S city as the family’s main base.
