Chapter 338: When did 337 ever pass?
The police officer finished speaking, made a signal to his colleague, and they both left.
“Nanny Zhang, see the officers out.”
When the visitors got to the door, Mo Xiuchen lazily spoke up, his words laden with insincerity.
“Mr. Mo, since everything is fine, I’ll be leaving too.”
The lawyer, sitting in front of the couch, had noticed Mo Xiuchen’s indifference and wisely decided not to bother him further. After greeting them, he also left.
“What exactly is written in the newspaper?”
With bewilderment, Wen Ran looked at the newspaper left by the police on the coffee table and asked Mo Xiuchen.
Mo Xiuchen slightly curved the corner of his mouth, nonchalantly saying, “Curious, huh? Let’s read it together.”
He trusted Qin Mu’s work.
Seeing the police change their tune and apologize before leaving suggested that the details surrounding Yang Xinfa’s death, as reported in the newspaper, was eerie…
Mo Xiuchen took Wen Ran by the hand and guided her to the couch. As he sat her down and picked up the newspaper to read together,
Wen Ran’s eyes widened with astonishment. When she looked up, she saw Mo Xiuchen’s lips curled into a pleased smile, carrying hints of mockery. “Xiuchen, did Yang Xinfa really die from over-indulgence?” she stammered.
“Ha, you should ask Ah Mu about that,” Mo Xiuchen chuckled low.
Mu indeed knew something about it. Well, coming up with such a scheme was indeed remarkable.
Yang Xinfa had numerous lovers. His wife, unable to bear this behavior any longer, only held back because of their years of marriage and fear of tarnishing his reputation. Seeing the news of her husband’s demise in the bed of a woman, she would no longer keep their secrets if questioned by the police.
“Qin Mu?”
The surprise in Wen Ran’s eyes intensified. Qin Mu seemed so icy, lacking even a single female friend aside from their mutual acquaintance, Shen Yuting.
Could he really understand these things?
Mo Xiuchen, seeing Wen Ran’s surprise, couldn’t help but feel amused. He stroked her nose affectionately, saying, “Mu did investigate Yang Xinfa and found out about his many lovers. Last night, he had a rendezvous with one of them who happened to be a woman from a bar…”
Wen Ran was slightly dazed but her current concerns weren’t for Yang Xinfa’s death. She blinked, asking, “Now that Yang Xinfa is dead, isn’t there any obstruction to uncover the truth behind the crane accident and offer the two victims some closure?”
“Hmm, indeed. Things are much easier to deal with now that Yang Xinfa is dead.”
Mo Xiuchen put down the newspaper, calling for Nanny Zhang.
“Young Master, breakfast is ready. I’ll go set the table now.”
Nanny Zhang rushed in with a beaming smile, relayed the message, and headed back into the kitchen.
Just as Mo Xiuchen had said, with Yang Xinfa’s death, some matters had become easier to resolve.
At the very least, the investigation of the construction site accident was no longer hindered because of him.
Concerned about the unfolding events, Wen Ran didn’t go to the hospital to visit Bai Xiaoxiao after breakfast but accompanied Mo Xiuchen to the office instead.
A press conference was scheduled for three o’clock in the afternoon, meaning that there were certain matters that needed to be sorted out before then.
When Mo Xiuchen and Wen Ran arrived at the office, they ran into Mo Jingteng and Mo Zixuan alighting from a car.
Wen Ran was unaware that Mo Zixuan had been called back to work at the company by Mo Jingteng again. Upon running into Mo Zixuan and Mo Jingteng together, her expression changed. She glanced up at Mo Xiuchen.
The latter returned her gaze with a comforting smile intending to assure her and indicating that she had nothing to worry about.
“Xiuchen!”
Mo Jingteng called out to Mo Xiuchen.
Maintaining a distance of a few steps, he propped himself on his cane, his gaze fixed on Mo Xiuchen and Wen Ran.
Mo Zixuan, standing beside him, scanned through the intertwined hands of Mo Xiuchen and Wen Ran with a frigid expression.
Although he had lost his memories of Wen Ran, witnessing their intimacy irked him.
Especially since Mo Jingteng had cleverly ignited his deepest desires the night before – for wealth, status, and even women.
Mo Jingteng was truly ruthless.
In order to keep Mo Zixuan under his control and let Mo Xiuchen know that the chair of the CEO didn’t empower him to do as he pleased, Mo Jingteng didn’t hesitate to inform Mo Zixuan of his previous close relationship with Wen Ran.
He even manipulated the truth to spice up the narrative.
A flicker of darkness crossed Mo Xiuchen’s deep-set eyes. When he approached Mo Jingteng, he faintly called out, “Dad, how come you’re at the office?”
Mo Jingteng hummed dismissively through his nostrils. As soon as a few higher-ups passed by, he inquired frostily, “Why did you turn off your phone yesterday? You didn’t even pick up the home phone.”
“I was busy abroad without a moment of rest, then suffered through an exhausting flight. Being tired and sleepy, I turned off my phone to get a good night’s sleep,” Mo Xiuchen replied carelessly, making it seem like he had done so simply to get some rest.
“You turned off your phone to rest for one night? Xiuchen, do you not need to listen to your father’s words since you’re now in the CEO’s seat?”
He approached Mo Xiuchen not as a chairman, but as a father.
He knew very well that Mo Xiuchen wasn’t easily swayed by his words. Now that he had stepped down, Mo Xiuchen, as the Group President, was not obligated to listen to him in every matter.
However, as a father, even if Mo Xiuchen was the CEO, he was still Mo Jingteng’s son.
“Father? Dad, when have you ever been a worthy father?”
Chuckles escaped from Mo Xiuchen, his lips curling into a smirk.
Calling him ‘Dad’ was merely due to the fact that he had given him life. It did not signify that he was a competent father.
The colour drained from Mo Jingteng’s face while a turbulent storm brewed in his eyes. Looking at Mo Xiuchen, his gaze was as sharp as a knife, “Xiuchen, what do you mean by that? Are you forgetting your father just because you’ve got a wife now?”
In his opinion, Wen Ran must have instigated Mo Xiuchen.
Although his son had always been estranged, he had simply avoided him before, sometimes even making him lose face with just three sentences. But now, observing them together as intimate as a couple, he was ablaze with rage.
He initially considered accepting Wen Ran, but she kept opposing him, time and again.
He even regretted seeking Wen Ran out to persuade Mo Xiuchen to take over the corporation when he was initially unwilling.
Mo Xiuchen’s gaze deepened, his voice like icy shards, “I’m stating facts. Start pressuring me with your role as a father once when you become a decent one. I’m not Zixuan, to be kicked away when unneeded and coaxed back with sweet words when useful!”
“Xiuchen, you…”
Mo Jingteng’s face turned a ghastly pale with rage. As he was about to say something, a wave of discomfort hit him. His hand trembled as he instinctively reached for his pocket.
