Chapter 281: Lie down for a bit longer
Chapter 281: Lie down for a bit longer
If she found out that Ah Kai’s mother passed away due to constantly missing her, would she feel even more guilt?
Hearing Mo Xiuchen’s words, Gu Kai also echoed, “Ranran, I won’t force you to do anything. I just want you to know that you are not alone. You’re luckier than other girls because you have two homes. Before, you only had Wen Jin, your brother, looking out for you. Now, you have two brothers.”
He enthusiastically ‘advertised’ himself: “From now on, I will strive to be a good brother, together with Wen Jin, we’ll protect you. We won’t let anyone bully you.”
His words seemed somewhat pretentious, so Gu Kai couldn’t continue and paused.
Mainly, it was due to Wen Ran’s silence. He couldn’t figure out what she was thinking, and he began to feel anxious again. It wasn’t easy to find his long-lost sister, but because they had been strangers before, it was difficult to get closer in a short time. This was normal.
He told himself that he mustn’t rush.
He needed to give Ranran time, she was a delicate girl, it’s natural she would have more thoughts.
There was silence in the room for a few minutes.
In the end, Wen Ran broke the silence, speaking lightly, “I understand. If there’s nothing else, let’s end this for tonight.”
She looked up at Gu Kai, a term of address that she used to call with such intimacy, at this moment, it seemed stiff and unnatural, “Older Brother Gu, go and rest.”
Before Gu Kai could respond, Mo Xiuchen spoke up: “It’s quite late now, why not let Ah Kai stay? Anyway, there are many guestrooms.”
He thought that while the iron was still hot, now that Wen Ran knew everything, it would be better for Gu Kai to spend the night here, have breakfast together with Ranran in the morning. Gu Kai had been busy these past few days and had no chance to meet Ranran.
Something flickered in Gu Kai’s eyes, but upon seeing Wen Ran, he got up and spoke casually, “It’s alright, it won’t take long for me to drive back. Ranran, take a good rest, I’ll be leaving first.”
After saying that, he turned around to leave.
“Older Brother Gu!”
Wen Ran stood up and called after Gu Kai.
Gu Kai turned back, his eyes gleamed joyfully at her.
Wen Ran bit her lip, “It’s very late, you might as well stay.”
Although she couldn’t naturally face him just yet and her mind was still in turmoil, she was aware that Gu Kai’s mood was probably not much better than hers.
He rushed over earlier, not knowing how fast he drove, he must have been very anxious.
Even if he went back now, he wouldn’t be calm. Driving at night was not as safe as during the day, coupled with the mental distraction, she didn’t feel comfortable letting him drive back again.
A hint of joy flashed in Gu Kai’s eyes, a brilliant smile filled his handsome face. It seemed staying overnight here meant more to him than successfully completing those complex surgeries, “Alright, I will stay. You should also rest early.”
“Pick a room yourself.”
A smile also appeared on Mo Xiuchen’s corner of his mouth as he instructed Gu Kai.
He had stayed at his house before, there was no need to treat him like a guest.
Gu Kai gestured to him not to worry, took large strides out of the bedroom, closing the door behind him, to search for a room to stay.
With Gu Kai gone, the room was left with Wen Ran and Mo Xiuchen.
Mo Xiuchen was sitting sideways, gazing at Wen Ran with soft, gentle eyes. He thought for a moment before saying in a low voice, “Ranran, I know you still have many doubts. It’s already late now. Try to get a good night’s sleep first. We’ll talk tomorrow.”
“Mm.”
Wen Ran didn’t ask any more questions, she wasn’t in a hurry for one night.
She thought to herself that she would look for her brother tomorrow; he surely knew more than Mo Xiuchen and Gu Kai.
That night, Wen Ran couldn’t sleep.
She was wrapped within Mo Xiuchen’s embrace, her eyes were closed, but she couldn’t fall asleep. Countless images flashed before her eyes, just like a slideshow, as she reviewed each one in her mind.
It felt like she was dreaming. She didn’t know if this was just a dream or whether when she woke up, everything would go back to just being Wen Ran, the biological daughter of her mom and dad, and the younger sister of her brother.
But then, there was a voice in her heart telling her this was not a dream, this was reality.
She wasn’t Wen, her surname should be Gu.
She was the daughter of the Gu family, the sister whom Gu Kai had searched for so long. It could even be that she was the person who saved Mo Xiuchen’s life, a fact that both Gu Kai and Mo Xiuchen had mentioned. They both agreed that the little girl who saved Mo Xiuchen was Gu Kai’s younger sister.
In that point of view, it seemed like the person they were both looking for was the same person.
Mo Xiuchen had also said that the feeling he had when he first saw her was similar to the little girl from those years ago. That’s why he cared about her, and why he managed to convince Zhou Lin to save her when Wenqing had ordered Zhou Lin to harm her.
There were also her unsolvable nightmares that plagued her since she was young. If the little boy in her dream was Mo Xiuchen, then who was the person trying to give her an injection in her dream? Why did they want to give her an injection…why can’t she remember any of these incidents, as though they were all forgotten?
She was plagued with numerous doubts that chased away her sleepiness. However, she didn’t want to impact Mo Xiuchen who was right beside her, so she closed her eyes and pretended to be asleep.
However, she didn’t fall asleep until dawn.
At her side, Mo Xiuchen was unclear when he had fallen asleep, maybe it was in the middle of the night. She could sense that he, too, initially couldn’t sleep and stayed awake with her in silence. Only when dawn approached did he fall asleep. Just as he fell asleep, she wanted to leave.
“Ranran!”
He pulled her into his arms again. His eyes, open now, held a trace of sleepiness and nervousness. He gazed at her intently.
Wen Ran’s heart ached slightly. She smiled back at him and said softly, “Keep sleeping.”
“You didn’t sleep all night, where do you want to go now?”
Mo Xiuchen looked at her with concern. He too had only recently fallen asleep. Throughout the night, Wen Ran hadn’t slept; he had simply kept her company in silence until the early morning when he fell asleep. He hadn’t expected to wake up to her wanting to leave.
“I can’t sleep, so I want to get up.”
Wen Ran pressed her lips together lightly.
“Ranran, if you don’t sleep, your body can’t take it. Be good and at least sleep a while. If your brother sees you like this, he’ll be heartbroken too.”
Wen Ran was surprised, it took her a while to understand whether ‘brother’ he was referring to was Wen Jin, or Gu Kai.
Mo Xiuchen bent his head to kiss her forehead, his warm lips lingered on her skin, gently explaining, “I am referring to Wen Jin. I know you have many doubts in your heart and definitely want to see him. But if you look like this in front of him, he would surely be heartbroken.”
