Chapter 227: 226 Rescue
Chapter 227: 226 Rescue
Ever since that day when Gu Kai and MO Xiuchen went to the hospital to question him, forcing him to reveal Wen Ran’s true lineage, he had been grappling with whether or not he should disclose her real identity to her.
And when would be the right time to do so?
In about a month, it would be their parents’ birthday. Maybe that would be the appropriate time to tell her.
But with what Ranran said today, she had asked the same questions when she was little. After her illness improved, their father relocated the family to G City, seeking to avoid the past without acknowledging it.
Yet, wherever there are people, there lies gossip and conflict. Whenever they went out together, those women who loved to spread rumours would say that he took after his parents, but she didn’t bear any resemblance to them.
At that time, Ranran was still young. She often had nightmares and would ask her mum and dad if she had been adopted because she didn’t look like them, nor did she look like him.
Eventually, over time, under the influence of her family, she began to exhibit some resemblance to their mother. It was not a matter of physical appearance, but some inconceivable qualities that were hard to articulate.
As she grew up, she stopped asking those questions. Whether it was their parents or him, they all loved her very much. Surrounded by happiness, apart from inexplicable nightmares, she never again had unsettling thoughts.
As soon as Wen Ran entered the factory, her phone started ringing insistently.
She took out her phone and saw who was calling, her brows furrowing slightly. Zhou Lin hadn’t called her in a while, why is she calling her now?
Without a second thought, she rejected the call and walked towards the office building.
The phone paused for a few seconds and then started ringing sharply again, as if it would ring non-stop until she answered it. It was stubborn, relentless.
“Hello!”
Wen Ran pressed the answer button, walked up the steps, her voice, in the chill of the autumn season, held a hint of distance and indifference. Zhou Lin’s father, Zhou Mingfu, was responsible for her parents’ deaths, and Zhou Lin had slept with her boyfriend when she was most vulnerable…
She no longer had any affection for her.
“Ranran, please save me…”
The voice that reached her ears carried a profound sense of pain and a plea. Wen Ran was taken aback, one hand resting on the stair railing, standing on the marble steps she had climbed, “What happened?”
Her voice lacked genuine concern; it was more of confusion and doubt. She had been victimized by Zhou Mingfu several times before; she was naturally wary of Zhou Lin.
“Ranran, my stomach hurts! Please save my child…”
Zhou Lin had started crying, the pain in her voice was more intense, her words were stuttered, it was evident she was trying her best to endure: “…Ranran, please…”
“Where are you?”
Wen Ran frowned, and turned around to descend the steps.
Thinking about the siblings she had seen at the square earlier, she couldn’t help but soften. No matter how despicable Zhou Lin was, the child was innocent.
Zhou Lin disclosed her location – a coffee shop.
After hanging up, without even a second thought, Wen Ran immediately dialled MO Zixuan’s number. After two rings, MO Zixuan’s voice came through the line, jubilant, “Ranran, is it you?”
“Where are you?”
Wen Ran ignored his excitement, and immediately asked her question.
“Ranran, I’m at the office, what’s wrong?”
Detecting solemnity in her voice, MO Zixuan immediately dropped his jovial tone, and asked with concern.
“You need to get to the coffee shop at the corner of ** road immediately. Zhou Lin just called me asking me to save her child, something might have happened. ”
As Wen Ran stood in front of the flowerbed besides the office building, the blooming Camellia flowers caught her eyes. Autumn wind swept past, carrying with it the serene scent of the flowers.
“Ranran, why would she call you? Zhou Lin is notorious for her lies. She must be trying to trick you. Don’t trust her.”
Wen Ran knew MO Zixuan was heartless towards Zhou Lin, but his callousness towards his own child shocked her. Reflexively, she rebuked him. “MO Zixuan! Even if Zhou Lin can’t be trusted, it involves your own flesh and blood, how can you be so dismissive? The coffee shop isn’t far from your office. How would it matter if you rush there now?”
“Ranran, don’t be angry. It’s not what you think. I am going there now.”
It seemed as though MO Zixuan was terrified of losing Wen Ran’s respect. Upon being scolded, he agreed without hesitation, grabbing his car keys, leaving his office, then asking her one more thing, “Ranran, are you coming?”
“I don’t have the time, but I have already dialed the emergency number. They should get there around the same time as you. Go by yourself, and call me back later.”
Wen Ran lied, in reality, she had immediately called MO Zixuan after hanging up Zhou Lin’s call and hadn’t had time to call the emergency services.
“Okay!”
Hearing what Wen Ran had to say, MO Zixuan did not dare to hesitate a second longer.
After the call, Wen Ran gave it some thought and made another call to Gu Kai, asking him to dispatch an ambulance to the coffee shop at the corner.
“Ranran, why would Zhou Lin call you for help if she’s in trouble?”
Gu Kai asked with confusion, to which Wen Ran replied flatly, “I have no idea. Perhaps she thought of me since we were close before, and now that she’s in trouble, she doesn’t know who else to turn to.”
“She might be tricking you.”
Gu Kai did not readily believe Zhou Lin’s words.
Identifying the worry in his tone, Wen Ran chuckled lightly and assured, “Older Brother Gu, even if Zhou Lin is trying to deceive me, what could she possibly do if I don’t go there? I’ve sent MO Zixuan there, and I’m also arranging an ambulance for her, which is all I can do out of decency.”
Gu Kai laughed a little on the other end of the line, agreeing with her actions, “Ranran, you’re doing the right thing. You can’t trust someone like Zhou Lin easily. If you went there yourself and something happened, that wouldn’t be good. Now you’re sending MO Zixuan and an ambulance, if she’s lying, MO Zixuan won’t let her off the hook either.”
Everyone knew that MO Zixuan had no fondness for Zhou Lin. His mother had tried every possible means to get him to marry her, but he never complied. If he went there today only to realise it was a wild-goose chase, his feelings towards Zhou Lin would only intensify.
“Older Brother Gu, if Zhou Lin truly ends up reaching the hospital, remember to inform me of the outcome.’
Wen Ran had previously reminded MO Zixuan, but she was reminding Gu Kai again. After Zhou Lin had called her in such a rush, she really wanted to know what had happened to Zhou Lin.
“Rest assured, I’ll definitely let you know of the outcome.”
Gu Kai chuckled, it was just a small matter. He was delighted that Ranran had called him. With nothing else to do at the moment, he decided to personally make a trip to the scene to see what was going on..
