Chapter 206: 205 Gu Kai’s selected hairpin
Shen Yuting laughed, “Ranran, you’re absolutely right—why refuse something that’s free? And the best part is, we don’t have to pay for lunch.”
Looking at Wen Ran’s bright smile, Gu Kai recalled the words Wen Jin had said the previous day. A pang of pain shot through his heart. His fists tightened unconsciously, but he maintained a handsome smile on his face. “No problem, and it’s not just you two. I can afford to treat even ten or eight of you.”
“Ranran, are you ready? If so, let’s go!”
Wen Ran nodded. Nanny Zhang had told her earlier, so she had her bag ready. There wasn’t anything else for her to pack. Gu Kai returned to the car, opened the door for the two ladies, and courteously invited them to get inside. After helping them shut their doors, he finally went over to the driver’s seat and climbed in.
“Ladies, let’s be on our way! ”
Gu Kai looked at Wen Ran, who was seated in the back, through the rear-view mirror and said cheerfully.
Yesterday, he revealed Runan’s identity to his father, Gu Yan, who was very emotional, but agreed to their proposal to withhold this from Wen Ran until the right time came to let her know about her true lineage.
Gu Kai promised his father that he would be good to his sister in the future, even if she didn’t recognize him. He was still the one she would call her Big Brother Gu. Plus, they got along well and shared many common hobbies. None of this would affect his desire to indulge her.
Were it not for the premenstrual cramps which made her feel uncomfortable, Wen Ran would have enjoyed shopping.
Shen Yuting was a woman of great taste and fashion sense. She led Wen Ran around from one shop to the next, picking out some clothes for herself, and even a few for Wen Ran.
Gu Kai sat on the couch, watching them try on different outfits while generously offering to pay with his card. Wen Ran didn’t want him to pay, but Gu Kai insisted, even saying that he would have MO Xiuchen repay all the money spent.
“Ranran, just let cousin pay. If you refuse, then I’ll have to pay for my share.”
Realizing that Wen Ran was being stubborn, Gu Kai made a silent plea to Shen Yuting. Having heard from MO Xiuchen earlier that Wen Ran could be Gu Kai’s sister—which meant she was also her cousin— she understood what her cousin had in mind and helped convince Wen Ran to agree.
“Alright then!”
In the end, Wen Ran gave in and agreed to let Gu Kai pay.
Gu Kai’s face instantly lit up with joy. He looked as if he had just won a multi-billion lottery.
After spending more than an hour shopping, it was almost eleven o’clock. In a jewelry store, Gu Kai personally picked out a hairpin and told Wen Ran, “Ranran, please try this one on.”
“Sir, your taste is excellent. This hairpin was just released yesterday. Albeit simple in design, it is made of top-quality crystal and elaborately cut. It exudes nobility within simplicity. It would be a perfect fit for the young lady…”
The enthusiastic introduction of the shop assistant only made Gu Kai smile even brighter.
Shen Yuting took the hairpin from Gu Kai’s hand and put it on Wen Ran’s head for a trial. “Ranran, look, it’s really beautiful. My cousin has always had good taste.”
“Isn’t it unnecessary? I have a lot of hairpins back home,” Wen Ran protested.
Perhaps it was just her imagination.
But Wen Ran felt that Gu Kai’s attitude and the way he looked at her were different from usual.
When someone treated her too well, Wen Ran would instead feel uneasy.
At her refusal, Gu Kai’s smile stiffened a bit, and he felt a slight disappointment.
Soon, he recovered his smile and said, “Ranran, you don’t have to worry about it. I’ll make MO Xiuchen pay me double for all your expenses today.”
Having made such a declaration, and in the presence of others, if Wen Ran continued to refuse, it would certainly upset him.
She smiled gently and joked, “This hairpin is selected by you, Brother Gu, and should not be included in my previous expenses. How about this? When you get a girlfriend, MO Xiuchen and I will select a gift in return.”
Gu Kai’s eyes twinkled as he burst into a hearty laughter, “Deal! Hold you to that promise! ”
He understood the hint in Wen Ran’s words and couldn’t help but feel a bit uneasy.
After all, she still wasn’t aware of her true lineage—that he was her brother by blood.
His extra care and attention made her – always mindful of other’s feelings uncomfortable.
It was no wonder that Wen Ran was overly cautious – in fear that MO Xiuchen
woma Decome Jealous.
Remembering how MO Xiuchen became jealous about her relationship with her brother, Wen Jin, and even asked her to keep a distance from him .
She could not help but walk on eggshells. If she needed to keep a distance from her own brother, not to mention other men.
Gu Kai was unaware of MO Xiuchen’s request for Wen Ran to maintain a distance from Wen Jin.
If he knew, he would definitely criticize MO Xiuchen for being petty. It was his fault that every time Gu Kai showed a bit of affection towards Ranran, she would overreact.
He pitied himself, needing to tread so carefully just to be nice to his own sister.
Regardless, Wen Ran accepted the hairpin he chose, which put Gu Kai in great spirits.
As they left the jewelry store, Gu Kai noticed a hint of fatigue in Wen Ran’s eyes, and her complexion didn’t look too good. A frown formed on his forehead before he suggested, “There’s a decent dessert shop up ahead. Shall we go and rest there while we enjoy some desserts?”
“Sounds good!”
Wen Ran readily agreed; she too was thinking of taking a break.
The moment the three of them walked into the dessert shop and ordered, her phone rang.
“Even when he’s on a business trip, that guy MO Xiuchen never forgets to call you.”
Seeing the caller ID on Wen Ran’s phone screen, Gu Kai joked.
At his side, Shen Yuting’s laughter slightly stiffened, however, she quickly regained her composure.
Wen Ran smiled and pressed the answer button, her voice soft and gentl,
“Hello, Xiuchen.”
Ever since MO Xiuchen ‘confessed’ his love to her yesterday, their relationship deepened naturally.
She now addressed him by his name directly, dropping his surname, sounding both intimate and tender.
“What are you doing now? Does your stomach still hurt?”
MO Xiuchen’s magnetic voice entered her ear like the warm autumn sun outside the window. This made Wen Ran’s eyes brim with laughter inadvertently, “I’m not in pain anymore. Are you just off the plane?”
Even though Gu Kai couldn’t hear what MO Xiuchen was saying, when he heard Wen Ran say ‘I’m not in pain anymore’, he frowned. He watched Wen Ran for a while, wondering if she was uncomfortable.
MO Xiuchen was giving advice warmly on the other end of the phone, urging Wen Ran not to touch cold water, avoid spicy food in the next few days, and assuring her that he would return as soon as he finished his business on his end..
