Chapter 149 - 149: 148 Waiting for me
“You can look for Xiaoxiao’s parents,” Wen Ran answered.
Still annoyed with what Xiao Yuting had said to Xiaoxiao at the Yi Pin Xuan Pavilion, Wen Ran had already figuring out his motive to find Xiaoxiao — thanks to the latest scandal Li Qian had just shared with her.
Both the Xiao and Bai families belonged to old and well-known families. Xiao Yuting’s parents and Bai Xiaoxiao’s parents had been friends for many years, and the two of them had been engaged since their infancy.
When Xiaoxiao was eighteen, Xiao Yuting’s mother gave a generational emerald bracelet to her, something only the daughters-in-law of the Xiao family could own across generations.
Although Xiao Yuting did not care about Bai Xiaoxiao, the elders of the Xiao family only recognized Xiaoxiao as their daughter-in-law.
To marry another woman, he had to first break his engagement with Xiaoxiao and take back the bracelet.
“Wen Ran, I know you are upset for Xiaoxiao. However, one can’t force love. Would you prefer to see Xiaoxiao married to me and being unhappy for the rest of her life?”
Wen Ran’s grip on her phone tightened involuntarily. How much could Xiao Yuting be in love with that model, determined enough to disregard everything else?
To be honest, Wen Ran did not want Xiaoxiao to marry Xiao Yuting. Leaving aside the fact that he did not love Xiaoxiao, his philandering ways had long made him unworthy of her.
“I can put Xiaoxiao in touch with you, but you must promise me not to hurt Xiaoxiao,” Wen Ran added.
What Wen Ran referred to was his attitude. Xiao Yuting understood it naturally and agreed right away: “Okay, I’ll have a good talk with Xiaoxiao.”
“I’ll call you back later,” Wen Ran concluded, and hung up the phone despite his response.
Bai Xiaoxiao, who went abroad for vacation, had switched off her original phone and given Wen Ran a new number. That was why Xiao Yuting could not reach her.
As Wen Ran dialed Bai Xiaoxiao’s number, she thought about how she should explain the situation to her.
After the phone rang a few times, it got picked up. Bai Xiaoxiao’s crisp and joyful voice came through, with faint sounds of waves crashing against rocks in the background.
“Hello, Ranran. I’m at the beach. Why did you call me at this time? Do you miss
A smile spread across Wen Ran’s lips, and a pang of indescribable emotion rose within her. “Yeah, I miss you. When are you coming back?”
“Ranran, did Xiao Yuting contact you?”
Heard Bai Xiaoxiao’s words, Wen Ran was taken aback. Surprised, she asked,
“Xiaoxiao, do you already know?”
“Haha, I accidently stumbled upon the entertainment news the other day. Last night, I called home and heard from my mom that he’s going to get engaged with that model. If he can’t get in touch with me, I thought he would definitely reach out to you,” Xiaoxiao replied breezily, with the sounds of sea breeze intertwining with her words. There wasn’t any trace of sorrow.
Wen Ran lightly bit her lip, solicitude lining her words as she asked, “Xiaoxiao, what are your thoughts?”
“I’ve bought a ticket. Please pick me up at the airport at 3pm tomorrow. Even if you didn’t call me, I would have called you,” Xiaoxiao confidently told her.
Ignoring the emotions in her heart, Wen Ran cheerfully replied, “Okay, I’ll ensure I reach the airport before 3pm to receive you. No matter what decision you make, I’m here to support you unconditionally.”
“Ranran, you’re so kind!”
A moment of silence passed through the phone. Then, Xiaoxiao’s voice sounded, with a tinge of choking. As this reached Wen Ran’s ears, her heart tightened.
When near the end of the workday, MO Xiuchen called Wen Ran.
After Wen Ran had a long conversation with her cousin and elder brother, her voice had gone a little hoarse.
“Ranran, what happened to your voice? Are you sick?” MO Xiuchen asked with concern, noticing the difference in her voice just from her greeting.
Wen Ran smiled lightly and said, “I spoke too much this afternoon and now my throat is a little hoarse. Are you still at the construction site?”
“Yeah, I was just about to return to the office. I’ve heard that your medicinal herbs supplier has suddenly demanded a price increase. Is there anything I can help with?” MO Xiuchen inquired. He must have received this information from someone and then immediately called Wen Ran.
A warmth filled Wen Ran’s heart. She gently said, “It’s okay. I have already found out. Zhou Mingfu tricked some of the medicinal herb suppliers into raising prices collectively. I’ve just discussed a strategy to handle this with my brother. We’ve decided to send someone to meet the suppliers in person.”
“Ran ran, instead of going over, why don’t you invite the suppliers to G City? You already knew Zhou Mingfu was behind this, so you could obtain the evidence at the same time,” MO Xiuchen calmly suggested after hearing Wen Ran’s explanation, not because he didn’t believe Ranran could handle it well — after all, she had already discussed this with Wen Jin.
His suggestion was born out of his intention to help. If Gu Kai was also included, the entire situation could shift, completely turning the tide in their favor.
MO Xiuchen simplified his thoughts and relayed them to Wen Ran. After hearing them, Wen Ran was deeply moved and immediately agreed: “Okay, let’s proceed as you suggested.”
After a brief pause, she added: “MO Xiuchen, thank you!”
“Drop the surname and say it again!” MO Xiuchen was slightly upset on the other end of the phone. Even her words of thanks were uttered with his full name, making him uncomfortable.
Wen Ran paused in thought, silently practicing how to call his name. She usually did not refer to him by his full name. However, it seemed too intimate and ambiguous to call him Xiuchen directly.
“Ranran!” MO Xiuchen couldn’t help calling out her name gently through the phone. He couldn’t see her face, but he could probably guess her expression now. His deep and magnetic voice was filled with an undertone of passion as he called out ‘Ranran’, seemingly tickling her heart with a feather. Her heart trembled uncontrollably.
“Xiuchen, thank you!” The softness in Wen Ran’s voice was clear, free of surnames, and simply calling his name made the listener’s heart melt.
“Wait for me, I’ll pick you up from work,” MO Xiuchen assured her in a cheerful voice with a trace of satisfaction.
“Aren’t you working late?” Wen Ran asked, surprised. Hearing the joy in his words, a bright smile bloomed in her eyes, her heart beating a little out of rhythm due to the man on the other end of the line.
Whirling emotions flooded her heart, too complex to describe or understand. A sense of unfamiliar joy mixed with emotion welled up — she was actually looking forward to his appearance.
“Ah Mu is working late tonight. What do you feel like eating? My treat,” MO Xiuchen glanced at the begrudging Qin Mu and briskly walked towards his Aston. His aura was calm and gentle..
