Chapter 100 - 100: Panic 100
“She’s already asleep. Is there anything you need?”
On the other side of the phone, MO Xiuchen’s voice was low and calm, betraying no emotion. Yet thousands of miles away, Wen Jin sensed something was off and coldly questioned, “Where are you now? Even if she’s asleep, her phone shouldn’t be with you. Did something happen to Ranran?”
Even though they weren’t blood siblings, having spent over sixteen years together, Wen Jin and Wen Ran had developed a profound bond and naturally shared an understanding and empathy.
“I came to F City after work today. I just had dinner and was about to go back to the hotel. She’s been tired these days, there’s nothing wrong with her sleeping. If there’s nothing wrong, hang up. I don’t want to wake her up. But if there’s something urgent, I’ll wake her up.”
MO Xiuchen lied smoothly without a hitch. Though Wen Jin had his doubts, he was miles away and his suspicions were limited to his sight; he had to take MO Xiuchen’s word for it.
“I don’t need anything, let her sleep!”
Upon hearing that Wen Ran had been tired these few days and had fallen asleep before reaching home, Wen Jin felt pity. He hesitated for a while but didn’t insist on hearing Wen Ran’s voice.
MO Xiuchen immediately hung up his call. A minute later, the car stopped atop a mountain. Theirs was not the only car ascending the mountain; ‘Uncle Ming’s’ car and his people had been leading the way.
When Wen Jin’s call came, MO Xiuchen intentionally asked Luo Haofeng to slow down, so as not to raise his suspicions. He knew that Wen Ran hadn’t told Wen Jin about last night’s incident to prevent him from worrying. Therefore, he played along with her deceit.
Wen Jin, being a bedridden patient, couldn’t be of much help, even if he knew.
‘Uncle Ming’s’ men had already subdued everyone. MO Xiuchen alighted from the car and in a drastic change from his earlier composure, anxiously grabbed one of them to ask, “Where’s Wen Ran? What have you done to her?”
“She escaped and jumped off the cliff.”
One of them answered fearfully. Upon hearing these words, MO Xiuchen’s breath hitched, his face turned deathly pale, and his eyes sharpened as he grabbed the man by his collar and asked sternly, “Where did she jump off the cliff? Take me there now.”
Meanwhile, Luo Haofeng stepped forward and kicked their ‘boss’, right at ‘that’ spot, causing a scream that shattered the silence on the mountaintop.
“I’ll take you there!”
Seeing their boss in pain, curled up on the ground like Liu Mazi, this man’s legs gave out, and he almost fell to his knees. He opened his mouth but couldn’t manage a single word. It was another person beside him who stuttered an answer, his voice trembling heavily.
“Young Master MO, I’ll send a couple of our guys to help you find Miss Wen. As for these people, you can decide how to deal with them later.”
‘Uncle Ming spoke. MO Xiuchen thanked him and after being pointed in the right direction, took off in a run.
“Uncle Ming, we’ll leave this place to you. We need to go find Wen Ran.”
Luo Haofeng spoke a sentence to ‘Uncle Ming’ and then chased after MO Xiuchen. They carried flashlights, unlike Wen Ran and those men who were chasing in the dark. The mountaintop was covered with plants and shrubs, their footprints left visible traces.
MO Xiuchen followed the traces towards the edge of the cliff, an indescribable sense of dread quietly spreading within him. He gripped his flashlight tighter and tighter, till his knuckles turned white.
A voice inside him silently reassured, she will be alright!
