Chapter 76 - 76: Pity for him
“Who would help her?”
Wen Ran’s serene eyes flashed with shock, her thoughts racing. On impulse, she blurted out, “Did she bribe the MO family’s servants… It couldn’t possibly be Xiao Wenqing, could it?”
Cheng Jia, being an outsider, could hardly succeed without the help of someone from the MO family. But Wen Ran didn’t want to believe that Xiao Wenqing was the one helping Cheng Jia; she would rather think it was the MO family’s servants.
“She used to work at Nanqin Hotel. Before Zixuan took over, it was Xiao Wenqing who was in charge there.”
MO Xiuchen’s deep voice contained a touch of menacing undertones. Upon hearing this, Wen Ran’s face slightly changed. “You’re implying that Wenqing helped Cheng Jia and drugged our food? She knows you’re impotent… why would she do that?”
When Wen Ran mentioned MO Xiuchen’s impotence, she paused for a few seconds, leaving the words unsaid. The flush of anger on her face faded. If it was Wenqing who did this, that would be too much.
Frankly, she didn’t like that woman either. She had long thought Xiao Wenqing was insincere and opportunistic. The fact that Wenqing refused Zixuan’s pursuit for a year was due to this reason.
If she’d known things would turn out this way, she never should have accepted Zixuan’s confession in the heat of the moment.
MO Xiuchen’s lips curled into a cold smile. He removed his hand from her shoulder, straightened himself, and said icily, “Since our marriage, Wenqing refuses to believe that I truly am sick.”
Wen Ran’s brows knit lightly, watching MO Xiuchen’s handsome face turn frosty. She saw it earlier tonight, MO Xiuchen was really indifferent towards Wenainz and at this moment he didn’t bother concealinz his hostilitv.
For some reason, seeing him like this caused a twinge of anxiety deep within her. A feeling akin to pity and heartbreak welled up inside her. She couldn’t help but cry out, “MO Xiuchen!”
MO Xiuchen turned his head to look at her, his deep gaze was as bottomless as a pool.
She pursed her lips and softly asked, “Did your mother leave you because of Xiao Wenqing?”
MO Xiuchen’s expression suddenly turned rigid!
His entire body tensed up at her question. His dark eyes turned colder and filled with hatred. Wen Ran felt as if the car’s interior had suddenly frozen over, causing her to shiver from the cold.
MO Xiuchen’s lips were tightly pressed, scenes from the past hidden deep within his memory resurfaced. His handsome face turned a shade paler. Those memories, he would rather not recall, let alone share with anyone.
The atmosphere abruptly froze.
After asking that question, Wen Ran felt remorse. She didn’t intend to reopen his old wounds, she just genuinely wanted to show him her concern.
Her gaze fell on his clenched fist, noticing the slightly blue-knuckled joints. In a moment of impulse, she reached out to grasp his clenched fist and said apologetically, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have asked those questions. Let’s pretend I never did. Let’s go home now!”
At the sudden warmth seeping into his skin, MO Xiuchen’s rigid body subtly shivered. Looking into her remorseful eyes, a flicker of warmth splintered through the icy layers in his own. The frosty aura surrounding him gradually dissolved and retreated like a receding tide.
His thin lips moved slightly, his low voice betrayed no trace of sorrow. His tone was indifferent as if narrating someone else’s story: “When I was eight, my mother found out that my father not only had an affair, but also had a son out there. Unable to bear the shock, she jumped from a building and committed suicide.”
Wen Ran turned to face him, both her hands clasping his tightly as if to convey warmth in such a manner.
She Imew that hidden beneath his calm and indifferent words were profound pain and grief. When his mother left, he was only eight, merely a child.
Nanny Zhang had told her that before he was kidnapped, he was deeply engrossed in the pain of his mother’s loss. It was only after the brush with death that he found his strength.
The force with which she held his hand gradually increased amidst the waves of sympathy.
MO Xiuchen’s icy gaze slowly warmed. He gave her a small smile and said, “Don’t worry. I won’t dwell on the things of the past anymore.”
He patted the hand that clung onto his. This sensation reminded him once again of the time when he was kidnapped and he was with the little girl. “Are you still planning on visiting the cemetery tonight?”
Wen Ran asked softly, looking at MO Xiuchen’s attempt to cover his sorrow with indifference. There was a moment when she wished she could have travelled back in time, to be able to accompany him during the most fragile, and loneliest times of his life.
MO Xiuchen shook his head and answered lightly, “Not tonight. I’ll take you another day.”
He paused briefly before adding while looking into Wen Ran’s eyes, “I’ve explained everything I needed to, you wouldn’t still be angry, would you?”
Wen Ran’s eyes shimmered and she turned away from him without saying a word, “When was I ever angry?”
MO Xiuchen chuckled. He leaned closer towards her, causing Wen Ran to look at him in surprise, asking with caution, “What are you doing?”
“Fastening your seat belt.”
MO Xiuchen put one hand on her shoulder while reaching over with his other hand to fasten her seat belt. He calmly reminded, “Even if you’re mad, you snoulan’t turn ort your pnone. It you nave any Issues, you can always ask me directly. ”
“I wasn’t angry.”
Wen Ran frowned, denying it abruptly.
“I knew Cheng Jia would try something tonight. The drugs she used would have no effect on me, but they would have had on you. If it were you who had been drugged tonight, there’s no way I would have just left you in cold water overnight. ”
MO Xiuchen returned to his seat and started the car back on the road after fastening his seatbelt securely.
Wen Ran was stunned into silence as she stared at him, his words echoing repeatedly in her ears. She didn’t know what he meant by saying ‘he wouldn’t let her soak in cold water overnight’. If she had been the one drugged, would he have helped her get an antidote?
As the thought crossed her mind, Wen Ran shook her head instantly to dispel the idea. She was his wife after all, how could he let another man…
Out of sudden, she turned to look at MO Xiuchen who was driving. The glow from the car’s headlights illuminated his sharp and handsome features. Her gaze lingered on his lightly pursed lips, the memory of the domineering kiss he imparted earlier still fresh in her mind. A tremor shot through her heart causing her to turn away hastily and resumed her earlier task of watching the night scene outside the window.
Although MO Xiuchen’s gaze was fixed on the road ahead, he didn’t miss the woman’s reaction from the corner of his eye. She had stared at his lips for a while, before turning away in confusion as her cheeks flushed.
He lifted a finger to trace it along his own lips, still able to taste the flavor of their kiss just now. Remembering it erected a sense of passionate heat within him.
He regretted informing Wen Ran earlier that the drug would have no effect on him.. Even if there were relatives at her home, he could have taken this opportunity to claim some benefits…
