Chapter 35 - 35: 035 Obsession
Wen Ran didn’t look at Cheng Jia, her clear, deep eyes stared firmly at MO Xiuchen. His evasive remark made her heart skip a beat unexpectedly. It reminded her of a recurring dream she has had since she was a child.
In her dream, there was a boy. His age, his face, all unknown to her. In the dream, she would tell the boy to run. And he would tell her, he would definitely come back to find her…
“Did something happen to you when you were a child?”
MO Xiuchen hinted at a smile, not willing to discuss further, “Let’s eat first. If you want to know, I’ll tell you later.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Gu Kai picked up his chopsticks. Smiling, he
said to Wen Ran, “Wen Ran, I know about Xiuchen’s past. It you’re curious, I can tell you later.”
Wen Ran wasn’t necessarily curious. It was just a question borne out of care. Hearing their replies, she gave a small smile and nodded. She was about to respond when she heard the seething voice of Xiao Yuting echo across the dining hall, “Even if I become a bachelor, I will never accept you, Bai Xiaoxiao.”
She turned her head in shock, catching sight of Xiao Yuting storming off from his table, while the beauty he had been dining with was already near the entrance.
At the table, Bai Xiaoxiao bit her lip. Her face was pale, her gaze fixed in the direction of his departure.
A sudden tightness gripped Wen Ran’s heart. She withdrew her gaze, telling MO
Xiuchen, “You go ahead and eat, I’ll check on Xiaoxiao.”
“Miss Wen, is that lady your friend? Is she alright?”
Cheng Jia looked bewildered and shocked. She voiced her questions to Wen Ran, who was about to get up from her seat. Wen Ran glanced at her, brows slightly furrowed, but made no reply.
Not just their table, the entire hall likely heard Xiao Yuting’s declaration. Even someone as naive as Cheng Jia should understand what just happened. Her questions, to Wen Ran’s ears, were more hateful than outright mockery. “Go ahead. I’ll take care of the check for that table.”
MO Xiuchen nodded, speaking softly. As Xiao Yuting had stormed off in anger, he likely hadn’t paid the bill.
Gratefully, Wen Ran thanked him and quickly walked towards Bai Xiaoxiao’s table. Xiaoxiao was looking blankly at the entrance; Wen Ran knitted her brows, saying softly, “Xiaoxiao.”
Hearing her voice, Bai Xiaoxiao slowly lifted her head, eyes luminous except for the pain and sadness they held. She forced a smile for Wen Ran, but couldn’t quite manage it.
“Xiaoxiao, let’s get out of here.”
Wen Ran reached out to help Bai Xiaoxiao off her chair. With a shift in her expression, she lowered her head to open her purse, “I haven’t paid yet.” “You don’t need to. MO Xiuchen will settle the bill.”
As Wen Ran spoke, she turned to look towards MO Xiuchen. He was talking to a waiter. As he felt her gaze, he looked up and nodded at her, signaling that he had taken care of the bill.
In the parking lot, once in the car, Bai Xiaoxiao’s pent-up tears could no longer be held back. She broke down in Wen Ran’s arms, sobbing and asking, “Ranran, am I cheap? Knowing that Xiao Yuting doesn’t like me, yet still chasing him like a moth to a flame…l should have let go of him long ago…”
Wen Ran felt a tightening in her heart.
She had known Bai Xiaoxiao for twelve years, and only seen her cry three times. Each time, it was because of Xiao Yuting.
Wen Ran didn’t really understand the feeling of deep love. When she was with Zixuan, it was him who pursued her for more than a year. She had some affection for him, a smidge of lost heart, but it was not the same desperate love Bai Xiaoxiao felt for Xiao Yuting.
Zixuan’s ‘betrayal’ paled in comparison to the pain of losing her parents. At this moment, as Bai Xiaoxiao poured her heart out, Wen Ran didn’t know how to comfort her. All she could do was to pat her lightly on the back, offering her silent support in the best way she could.
After a good cry, having vented her feelings, Bai Xiaoxiao rubbed her eyes,
“Ranran, I’m okay now. You go back to the restaurant and find MO Xiuchen..”
