Chapter 768 - Almost Fooled
Chapter 768: Almost Fooled
‘Is someone here?’ Startled, Xia Fei had this thought.
There were tens of thousands of people on the Ancient Battlefield of Gods and Demons. One or two barging into a Divine Beast’s lair was fairly common; what mattered was the soft humming from this lady, which sounded strange yet delicate and gave Xia Fei the sense that he had heard it somewhere before.
After a while, two men and one woman confidently appeared within a kilometer of Xia Fei. Xia Fei’s hiding location was so perfect that no one would be able to spot him.
“Don’t move. You just successfully got promoted, and you’re still in the period when you’re making subtle adjustments to the changes. Moving too much won’t be beneficial to your body, so it’s best if you slowly take in your new level,” Oro whispered to Xia Fei’s ear.
Warriors needed some time of consolidation after every promotion. This was common knowledge to all. This was especially the case for Xia Fei, for he had gone up two levels at one go. It was important for him to take a breather so that he could stabilize and adjust to his new level of power. Engaging in a fight at this time would only leave him with some affliction, with the pros hardly outweighing the cons. The reason why Xia Fei had hidden himself in such a secluded location was exactly this.
“Looks like there’s really no one around. The warrior who killed the Divine Beast Blackscaled Axeblade should’ve departed already,” the man among the three with short hair spoke gravely. He sounded somewhat dissatisfied. While he looked young, the Law Realm was never somewhere when a person’s age could be determined by their looks. Old monsters with childish faces were everywhere, and the higher their level was, the harder it was to discern how long they had lived.
“What a pity. We’ve had our eye on the Divine Beast for a very long time, hoping that we could obtain the Heavenly Pearl, but it’s all in vain as someone else took advantage of the situation to snatch it away. Just which bastard out there did this! I’ll be sure to kill him if I ever find out who they are!” the other man, this one with curly hair, viciously spat.
Xia Fei found this scene to be hilarious. It turned out that he had not been the first to have his designs on the Heavenly Beast Spirit Pearl. As the saying went, ‘Predecessors plant trees for their descendants to take shade under.’ None of these three could have predicted that the pearl they had eyed for so long would end up in Xia Fei’s hands.
Before Xia Fei could even enjoy this joy he felt a few seconds longer, the conversation going on between the three newcomers jolted Xia Fei from his thoughts.
“Alright, enough talk. Best if we think about how we’re going to report back. We secretly barged into the Ancient Battlefield of Gods and Demons and mustn’t be uncovered. We won’t live either if someone discovers our presence! Thinking of getting even? We can only blame ourselves for being too careless, believing that no one could deal with the Blackscaled Axeblade. D*mm*t!”
‘Barged into the Ancient Battlefield of Gods and Demons?’ Xia Fei was in shock. A compass that could lead its user to the Ancient Battlefield had been treated like a treasure by Oro, yet these three here could actually barge in uninvited?!
The video signal depicted Oro’s look of utter surprise. He was stunned for a good while before solemnly stating, “Those three are only at the Law Emperor cultivation, so there’s absolutely no way they broke into the Ancient Battlefield by themselves! The only possibility was that some higher being broke the defenses of the Ancient Battlefield and subsequently sent in these warriors who met the requirements for entering this place. Though it’s been a long time since the Ancient Battlefield of Gods and Demons was abandoned, it’s still in the control of the veteran elders of the two peak races. The moment an expert above the Law Overlord cultivation enters, those undying old monsters will naturally be made aware of it. As such, they sent these little guys to keep an eye on the Divine Beast, instead.”
Oro made a reasonable guess. Take the old demon lord himself as an example; because he was not in the same space while remaining in the spatial ring, the system did not sense his presence. However, if Xia Fei were to take him out, then he would be in serious trouble.
The curly-haired young man was still pissed, spitefully hissing, “I reckon that the person who killed the Blackscaled Axeblade and the one who took the ring are the same person. Hmph! It’s a good thing that our master already made preparations to such an end and filled that spatial ring with the most diabolic power. As long as he opens it—hmph!”
Xia Fei broke out in a cold sweat when he heard this. It was fortunate that he had not yet investigated that ring that the Law of Time could very well be hidden in, otherwise he might have fallen for someone else’s trap!
Thinking about it, this would be very normal. Since these mysterious individuals had managed to nurture a Divine Beast secretly, they should have also discovered the two corpses; there was no way the items inside the ring would be spared.
Gritting his teeth, Xia Fei had the impulse to just charge out and kill these despicable individuals, but he quickly suppressed it after thinking about it.
That woman with them was still humming that strange tune of hers.
“Slap slap*
The curly haired man reached over and sent two slaps her way, viciously shouting, “Shut your trap!”
The woman’s eyes reddened, but she did not dare to resist. She meekly lowered her head, looking to the side in her anguish. That clean and clear face of hers bearing a deep imprint of a slap.
Xia Fei was no gentleman, but he deeply despised that man who slapped the woman. A warrior had to have their own prestige, but it should not be based on bullying the weak.
His eyes glazing over, Xia Fei began to feel utter contempt over the actions of the two men.
“The Goose Pagoda’s Grand Meet will be happening in half a month’s time. Our old master is sure to attend it; let’s just leave this place first and offer our heartfelt apology then,” the short-haired young man said solemnly.
The two men discussed some more details, such as how they would tell their old master and if they should prepare a gift of sorts, while the trio departed from the underground lair swiftly.
Xia Fei remained motionless, hiding in the darkness without making any movement whatsoever.
The old demon lord was anxious. “What are you still sitting around here for? Hurry up and check just what sort of evil and diabolical power is hidden in that ring!”
Xia Fei did not reply. After several minutes passed, the three suddenly turned back, investigated the place once more, before they finally departed very unwillingly.
“Turns out they faked leaving. Good thing that you didn’t make any sudden movements, or else you’d be discovered by them!” Oro exclaimed.
Xia Fei chuckled softly. “Those two men’s eyes betrayed their intention. Such a simple trick could fool a child but not me.”
Oro felt very embarrassed, for he had precisely been tricked by such a silly ruse.
“Actually, their cultivation is very average; you can easily kill the three of them all by yourself,” Oro casually added, in order to avoid awkwardness.
Xia Fei shook his head. “I won’t clash with them directly. Fighting with others after only just getting promoted can only bring me harm; plus, this is an important clue. Since there’s no Law of Time in this spatial ring, it can very well be in the hands of that master they spoke of.”
Oro was startled. “Does it mean that you’re planning on joining the Goose Pagoda’s Grand Meet that they mentioned?”
Xia Fei countered with a question of his own. “Would you give up a chance to get your hands on the Law of Time?”
Oro shook his head repeatedly. “Of course, I wouldn’t. This is the Law of Time we’re talking about! Plenty would even lay down their lives just to get hold of it.”
Saying this, Xia Fei very gingerly made his move and left the lair.
It looked like the road to locate the Law of Time would be anything but uneventful. Not only did Xia Fei fail to obtain this superb law power, he even nearly got unknowingly stabbed in the back by some unknown person. It was a good thing that he had at least managed to get hold of the Heavenly Beast Spirit Pearl, which more or less compensated for this loss.
This was when recollection dawned on him, and he mumbled to himself, “I think I know what that tune is. To think it’d be her…”
……
Returning to the surface, the first thing Xia Fei did was meet up with Moon Song, Xiaoyu, and the others.
“Xiaoyu.” Xia Fei ignored the strange looks he got from Moon Song and Autumn Cicada as he took Xiaoyu by her hand and asked her plenty of questions.
His gaze on Autumn Cicada contained plenty of hostility, for he believed that she was the one who had kidnapped Xiaoyu all those years back. If not for the fact that Xiaoyu appeared to be very close with Autumn Cicada, given his personality, Xia Fei would have already killed this woman.
In Xia Fei’s eyes, an enemy was an enemy. It did not matter that she was as pretty as the fairest fairy; that was no reason for her to remain alive. On this point, Xia Fei was much stronger than those people who would be rooted when faced with a pretty lady, except he seemed somewhat ruthless and callous.
“Miss, this is Big Brother Xia Fei, the one whom I’ve always spoken to you about,” Xiaoyu happily pulled Autumn Cicada over as she gushed.
Moon Song bit at her cucumber with a vengeance; Xia Fei had told her about Xiaoyu’s incident before, and the timing of this reunion was nothing short of coincidental, making Moon Song feel like she was an outsider. Obviously, this was an unhappy feeling to have.
“No wonder I found her name to be so familiar. So it’s her,” Moon Song stood by the side as she muttered under her breath. Actually, she wished that the hand Xia Fei was holding would be hers, but it was too bad that her personality made it impossible for her to show her jealousy openly.
Autumn Cicada nodded slightly at Xia Fei in a manner befitting of a lady with good upbringing.
Xia Fei coldly snorted. “Miss? What’s the relationship that the two of you have?”
He spoke these words rather uncivilly, which even the indifferent Autumn Cicada could sense. She curiously looked at Xia Fei, not understanding why he would show such hostility toward her for no rhyme or reason.
“Miss Autumn Cicada is my mistress, and I’m her handmaid.” Xiaoyu pouted.
“With me around, you don’t have to be a handmaid to anyone,” Xia Fei said with a gleam of coldness in his eyes, a flash of intense fire in his pupils.
Xiaoyu got somewhat flustered, afraid that Xia Fei would actually attack Autumn Cicada. From what she understood of Xia Fei, this was definitely something he was capable of doing.
“Big brother, it’s not what you imagined. Autumn Cicada is only my mistress in name when actually she’s always treated with utmost kindness! Without her protection, there’s no telling how I would turn out,” Xiaoyu anxiously stated.
Xia Fei did not fully believe Xiaoyu’s words, so he placed his two hands on her shoulders and softly said, “You don’t have to be afraid. I know that Autumn Cicada is from the Snowdrift Clan, but say the word and I guarantee that they won’t be able to do anything to you.”
Xiaoyu nodded. She had seen the performance of the Skywing Clan’s madmen, scaring the entire White Horse Constellation witless, forcibly turning the Nine Great Clans into eight. The Skywings were surely capable; the realm had been properly astonished when the Demon-sealing Cursed Blade got unsheathed!
Xia Fei did not think that Xiaoyu was staying in the Snowdrift Clan willingly, to remain by Autumn Cicada’s side, though he could tell that Xiaoyu was not telling a lie. Her explanation to this was her unwillingness to part with Autumn Cicada, and vice versa.
In the end, no matter how much Xia Fei coaxed her, Xiaoyu still had no wish to go back with him. Though cute as this little lady was, she was very headstrong deep down, and Xia Fei admired it deep down.
There was still some time before the Ancient Battlefield would close, but the fighting had practically come to an end. Xia Fei chatted with Xiaoyu as they held hands and made their way back, telling Xiaoyu about everything regarding her family.
Xia Fei had never been to Xiaoyu’s home, for he always felt that he owed her. However, under his instructions, Members of Xiaoyu’s family were given the highest regard and service by Quantum Holdings. Even during the sudden insectoid invasion, not a single hair strand of Xiaoyu’s family got harmed.
“Are you really not going back with me,” Xia Fei asked once again.
Xiaoyu shook her head lightly. “Miss Autumn Cicada can’t bear to leave me.”
His eyes swept over Autumn Cicada, who was completely at a loss on why Xia Fei would treat her so coldly.
“Alright, since that’s the choice you made. Still, remember: If you are ever in any trouble, you can head over to the Wind Garden and find me. If I’m not there, there’s still Xia Zonghai or Old Xiawu around, whenever, whatever!”
Xiaoyu nodded before biding Xia Fei farewell.
When it was time for Xia Fei to say goodbye to Moon Song, that lass had a sneaky smirk as she reminded him, “Remember: You still owe me that unconditional request.”
Cold sweat ran down his back. Xia Fei hurriedly walked away in the opposite direction with the two birds by his side. The Black and White Gods were still waiting for him elsewhere.
