Chapter 149
‘Can’t I have a moment of fun?’ The officer in charge thought. No peace, no fun, nothing. What is going on with his life today?
Just as he was ready to see some action, his phone rang. It was the same man from before. The officer did not know who he was, but he had to follow every word of the man. Why?
It all started the moment he received his call in the morning. At first, he paid no attention to him. You can’t just call a police officer and ask him to do as you want.
But he was soon bombarded with calls from officials he had never in his life dreamt of talking to. Be it the Additional Solicitor General, the minister of law or someone from the ministry of defence, everyone asked him to do as he was asked.
The man’s request was quite simple, go and arrest a lady. Well, they have done things of this sort all the time, so he was not very much against the idea. But when he got to know that the lady was none other than the rising business star of the city, that was a bit of a problem. Even police had to care about the unnecessary and dangerous exposure to media trials.
But the officer had to do it. More than the criticism among the citizens, which they will forget about in a day or two, he cared more about his job. And with that thought in mind, the officer with a few of his subordinates headed straight for Theation. But Jessica was not there. So they staked out in front of her company, and the moment she stepped out of her car, she was arrested and brought back to the station.
.....
And with that, they thought their job was done, but who would have thought that more trouble would come their way limping on a cane. As soon as Francis walked into the police station, everyone recognised him.
‘Why is he here?’ The officer, on seeing Francis come his way, thought, ‘Am I missing something?’
“Where is my granddaughter?” When these words escaped Francis’s mouth, the officer understood why he was there.
Now, this was a predicament for the officer. On the one hand, the officer had to follow the orders, while on the other, he could not just anger Francis. With no idea what to do, the officer was left with no other choice.
“Who are you?” The officer asked, ‘Don’t they say ignorance is bliss?’
And what followed was the officer being smashed by everyone left and right.
But finally, he had gotten a chance for some action. He had the opportunity to vent his anger on this new guy acting all smart and cheeky with him. And he was this close to cracking that skull open when his phone rang. He could guess who was on the other side, and he was right.
“Stop,” Not wanting to get disturbed, the officer asked for his lackey to stop.
“Sir...” The officer answered the phone in a flattering tone.
“Is that boy still there?” George did not beat around the bush and asked.
“Yes, sir.” the officer nodded, “I was about to host him to a proper police treatment. Do you have some suggestions?”
“Leave him,” George was not interested in whatever the officer was talking about.
“Ummm... Sir?” The officer had fear emerge in his heart. Don’t tell me that mere possibility is going to come true.
“Just let him go,” George repeated himself.
“Yes, sir.” The officer had no desire to question George. Those at the lowest level have this tendency to just follow orders in hopes of avoiding any mishap and getting by. ne.com
“But, sir...” Though he was willing to let go of Alex, he was confused about something else.
“What is it?” George asked. His plan had taken a blow, and with all that fiasco, he was sober now.
“What about that girl?” The officer asked.
“Let everyone go,” George said but paused, thinking about something, “Except for that old man. I want him, and only him to stay.”
“Yes, sir...” The officer almost saluted on the phone, but the call had ended already. Putting his phone on the desk, the man hurriedly made his way to the cell, afraid that his subordinate might get carried away.
“Let them go,” Sure enough, as soon as the lackey saw the call end, he was about to start thrashing Alex, but he was stopped.
The baton stopped in mid-air, and the lackey looked at his officer in charge in confusion, wanting to ask why?
“Just do as I say,” the officer waved his hand, “Two minutes, and I don’t want to see none of them except for the old man here.” The officer said and walked out of the cell, but Jessica followed behind him.
“Why my grandfather?” Jessica asked, “Wasn’t I the one you arrested?”
The officer did not answer but turned towards Francis, hoping that he would make her understand and ask her to leave, “You handle it.”
“But what about my case?” Jessica was not willing to leave the matter now.
“The team from Ullu flew back,” the officer replied, “You are free now.”
“Just like that?” Jessica was giving up on the matter.
“They followed the wrong Jessica here,” the officer leaned back on his chair and said, “They have accepted their mistake and have asked me to convey their apology to you.” The officer said and looked at Francis to step forward.
Francis nodded and pulled Jessica to the side. It took some time and effort from Francis to convince Jessica to leave the police station with Daniel and Alex.
“Thank you,” Daniel said as the three of them stopped beside Alex’s motorcycle.
“Auhh... Don’t say it. I was supposed to help when I am one of the concerned parties,” Alex waved his palm as he brushed off the matter.
Daniel smiled, “You know, I was supposed to be this great lawyer with a clear head, but whenever you are around me, I am nothing but a confused soul.” Daniel admitted only to get giggles from Alex and Jessica.
“Will my grandfather be okay?” Jessica suddenly asked.
Daniel nodded, “I think so,” but he did not truly believe that.
“Who was that man?” Jessica could not help but point out, “Didn’t you say he sounded like your father?”
“I don’t know...” Alex shrugged helplessly, “It felt like it, but I have no way of ascertaining that fact.” Alex shook his head.
“Why don’t you give him a call?” Jessica suggested.
“I can, but it won’t do any good,” Alex said, “Things have not been that good between us since our trip to Ullu. He never answers my call.”
Hearing Alex, Jessica felt downcast. She had to find out who was behind this episode. There is no way she was willing to accept that it was just a mistake from on police’s side.
Then she looked at Alex. The timing was also questionable. As soon as Alex stepped in, everything sorted out in a few minutes. It could be a coincidence, but it did not feel like it.
“Alex, when saw Jessica staring at him, touched his face, “is something wrong?”
“It’s nothing,” Jessica shook her head, “So, how is it like working as the big boss of a company? All you did at Theation was run errands, but now you have hundreds of people at your back and call.”
Alex chuckled, hearing her, “You know I am not the type to order people around. They love me, unlike someone else who runs her company like a dictatorial regime.” Alex was clearly pointing at Jessica.
“Huh...? What do you know about running a successful company?” Jessica said, mocking Alex.
“Weren’t you at the doorsteps of that small company hours ago?” Alex was acing every argument of Jessica.
“It’s all because of Veronica,” Jessica sighed, “I want her to do that project, and she wants you on board. You are nothing but a necessary evil.”
“Speaking of evil, how is everyone in the PR department?” Alex asked.
“How does evil makes you remember them?” Jessica looked at Alex, amused.
“Believe me, your PR department is haunted with evil,” Alex laughed. Thinking about evil, his thoughts straightaway drifted to Ellaine and Hazel.
“Haven’t you been in touch with them?” Jessica asked.
“It’s all easy to say that we will be in touch even after moving out from a place, but that’s hardly possible. Everyone is busy with their own life and stuff. I haven’t talked to any of them for a while,” Alex said.
And it was not just the PR department. Right now, Alex was going through this phase of loneliness. His father is not answering his calls. His mother is angry with him. Karen and others are just out of the loop, and then there was Margaret, for whom he kind of uprooted his life at Theation. He did not even know where she was. Once in a while, he would receive a text from her telling him she was alright, but nothing more.
“Well, they are alright,” Jessica said, “I have extended an offer of promotion to both Daniel and Karen. He was quick to accept,” Jessica said as she looked at Daniel, who in turn smiled, looking away, “But she is still reluctant for some reasons.”
“Wow... Isn’t that a good thing? Why would she be reluctant?” Alex asked.
“I don’t know. Everyone says that I am complicated. But believe me, I am nothing compared to her,” Jessica complained, “You never know what is going through her head.”
Alex looked at Daniel when he heard Jessica complain, ‘Didn’t he say the same thing?’
“Well, we should get going now,” Alex looked at his watch and said. The sun was beginning to go down. He was going to go straight home from here.
“Why don’t we have something to eat before you go your way?” Jessica suggested, ” You came all this way to help me. Let me treat you to a meal.”
“That...” Alex was hesitant to accept.
“Nothing lavish... Just some snacks,” Jessica insisted.
Now with Jessica insisting so much, it did not seem right to refuse her again and again. Alex decided to agree.
“Well, if it’s just a sna...” Just as Alex was about to agree, his phone buzzed.
Alex looked at the text he had just received, “I am sorry, but we will have to postpone it to some other time,” Alex said, and not explaining any further, hurriedly got on his bike and raised away from there.
